Co-ffee or not to be

ASTRA IS BUILT FOR REPETITION, NOT RESERVATION — TO BE PART OF THE DAY
Singapore — Astra is a modern New York–style deli with specialty coffee at its core, conceived as a walk-in coffeeshop for regulars.
About ten months old now, Astra operates two outlets along Orchard Road, a third opening soon, and is building toward a presence in every major mall across the shopping belt within two years, guided by its wallet-friendly, work-friendly model.
“We wanted somewhere people could order a long black to start the day for only $3.80, no upsize, no upsell,” says the founding team.
At Astra, the experience is intentionally casual. There are no reservations, no minimum spend, and no maximum stay. Customers can order at the counter, via QR code, or simply by catching a barista’s attention. Payment can be card, cash, paynow, wechat, alipay, anything really.
Coffee at Astra isn’t about ceremony. It’s about comfort and care, served in a space designed for flow over formality. Tight seating, transit-inspired finishes, and a jazz-hop playlist, paired by a piano in the corner, create an atmosphere that feels familiar on the first visit and improves each time.
Astra serves sourdough focaccia sandwiches made from scratch using a 100-year-old starter it shares freely — customers just bring a jar to collect. Each sandwich is prepared to order, using handmade pickles and in-house herbs, with the beef-filled Reuben as a menu anchor. All items are priced under $20.
Desserts follow the same approach: handcrafted chocolate mousse and vanilla gelato, rounded out by a house tiramisu — made without eggs, caffeine, alcohol or added sugar — rich, without excess.
Operationally, Astra runs at practically zero-waste and reached full profitability by its second month at both locations. The headline isn’t sustainability, but continuity — building a business that endures, so the practices can endure as well. Beyond what can’t be produced — avocado, raw honey, mortadella — everything else is housemade, from condensed milk and yogurt to purple sauerkraut, ensuring fresher food and higher quality standards.
Astra is built to be part of a day. Customers are welcome to step in before shifts start and stay after lights are shut off. No pressure to order again and no expectation to move on.
In a dining landscape driven largely by one-offs or irregular visits, Astra prioritises habit — a place for ritual, routine and repetition, day after day.
